AVAA Service description
AVAA is an open research data publishing platform which facilitates open access to data. The service enables publishing and reusing open research data. It serves both the producers and users of open data.
AVAA service is accessed through http://avaa.tdata.fi.
Data owners are offered the possibility to publish their data and related applications on the AVAA portal. Applications for querying, downloading and visualizing data through the browser or APIs may be implemented on the portal. These may be done by the researchers and research organizations, often in collaboration with the service provider.
AVAA offers applications for the use of open data, such as downloading and analysis by means of different visualizations. Through the applications published on the platform, the user can e.g., study the spreading of pollution clouds on a map and download the dataset for further study. Through the portal one may also access open map data through an API.
AVAA furthers the availability of research data in different disciplines. Anyone can access and use the data on the portal. In order to publish data and applications one must authenticate through the Haka network and be granted rights to the
server by the administrator of the service.
The service is free of charge to users. Nearly all data is openly accessible. Certain datasets require Haka authentication for access. The service clearly indicates which datasets require authentication and whether access is limited due to licenses.
The producers of research data, e.g. research groups, may offer their data for publication by contacting the service provider. Publishing data and applications on the portal requires Haka authentication and rights granted by the service provider. The data or applications may also be located on local servers at the research organization.
AVAA is a service offered by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland. The service is provided by CSC – IT Center for Science Ltd.
